FIRE AT RESTAURANT TRACED TO NEON LIGHT

A fire that damaged a local restaurant Sunday night probably was caused by a malfunction in a neon light, authorities said Monday.

Three volunteer firefighters - two from Kill Devil Hills and one from Nags Head - suffered minor injuries battling the blaze at Miller's Seafood and Steakhouse at 1520 S. Virginia Dare Trail. They were treated at Outer Banks Medical Center and released.

Several diners were in the building. They were evacuated without incident by restaurant personnel.

Kill Devil Hills Assistant Fire Chief Craig Clark said the blaze was reported at 7:28 p.m.

When firefighters reached the scene, heavy smoke was pouring from the attic and roof, and flames were shooting out of the south end of the building.

Firefighting units from Colington, Kitty Hawk, Nags Head and Roanoke Island joined Kill Devil Hills firefighters and battled the blaze for nearly four hours.

Fire damage was limited to the attic and south end of the restaurant. However, there was heavy smoke damage throughout the building, and moderate water damage.

``We believe the fire was caused by a neon exterior light,'' Clark said. ILLUSTRATION: Color staff photo by DREW C. WILSON/
