A 17-year-old high-school girl was unconscious and in critical condition Monday after the car she was driving was struck broadside by a pickup truck that ran a red light, police said.
Tracy D. Sonney was driving a 1987 Plymouth Colt through the intersection of Kempsville Road and Beaufain Boulevard when the car was hit by a 1988 Chevrolet pickup, said police spokesman Mike Carey.
Carey said the Colt then ran off the road, rolled through a fence and stopped in a nearby yard.
Sonney, an 11th-grader at First Colonial High School, lives in the 5500 block of Rutledge Road.
Police charged the pickup truck's driver, Adam Cardona, a 17-year-old Tallwood High School student who lives in the 1100 block of Borg Court, with reckless driving and failing to wear a seat belt.
Both students were taken to the Trauma Center at Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Carey said alcohol and high speeds were not factors in the accident.
Sonney suffered a severe head injury, Carey said. Cardona's injuries were not as serious, police said.
