Christopher Pike, vice president and general manager of WTKR-TV, won't be staying on at the CBS affiliate after it's purchased by The New York Times Co.
Pike said Wednesday that The Times has informed him that it plans to announce a new manager for the station next week. He said the manager will take over when the sale of WTKR, Channel 3, is completed - probably in late June.
The Times announced in February that it agreed to buy WTKR from Narragansett Television Inc. of Providence, R.I., for $76 million.
Narragansett bought WTKR in 1989 from Knight-Ridder Inc., and Pike has been the station's manager since then.
``It's disappointing, but not a surprise,'' Pike said of the planned management change. ``This happens more often than not when there's an ownership change.''
Under Pike, WTKR has expanded the number of hours devoted to local news, sports and community-affairs programming. But recently, WTKR's ratings have suffered. It was knocked to second place overall among Hampton Roads stations - behind ABC affiliate WVEC-TV - during the most recent ratings period.
Pike said he hasn't made any plans beyond WTKR. He said he wants to continue in TV-station management and will consider relocating.
