DRIESELL, TWARDZIK TO BE INDUCTED

PERHAPS THE MOST difficult task facing the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame each year is the selection of inductees into the state sports shrine.

Each year only six are chosen by the Honors Court of the Hall of Fame from among hundreds of worthy candidates.

Tonight, four living - Charles ``Lefty'' Driesell, Dave Twardzik, Bill Chambers and Frank Havens - and two deceased - Lily Harper Martin and Albert Doran - will be inducted in the 24th annual dinner program at the Holiday Inn-Portside. A social hour will begin at 6 p.m.

This will increase the honorees in the hall to 148.

To be inducted, an individual must have been born in Virginia and had accomplishments of national attention. Those not born in Virginia must have made their achievements in the state.

Driesell is a native of Norfolk and is currently head basketball coach at James Madison University. He also was head coach at Davidson and Maryland after a lengthy stint as a successful high school coach. He is now the 12th winningest college basketball coach of all time with nearly 700 career victories.

Twardzik, director of player personnel for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA, was a college basketball star at Old Dominion University and played professionally with the Virginia Squires of the ABA and Portland in the NBA. At ODU, Twardzik scored 1,660 points and had 880 assists.

Chambers, a Lynchburg native, was a high school basketball star at E. C. Glass and a collegiate standout at William and Mary. He set a NCAA single-game rebounding record of 51, which still stands.

A native of Arlington, Havens was a gold medal winner in the 1952 Olympics. Now an Eastern Shore resident, Havens set a record time of 57 minutes, 41 seconds in winning the single blade canoeing event. He competed in three Olympics and also won silver and bronze medals.

Martin will be joining brother Chandler Harper in the hall. Harper was inducted in 1973. Martin, who was placed in the VSHF Wall of Fame in 1982, won seven women's State Amateur titles in golf.

Doran was a successful high school coach at Lee and George Washington of Alexandria.

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for the awards dinner. The tickets are $25. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
