The Virginia District of the Eastern Surfing Association this weekend is hosting the association's regional contest.
More than 300 surfers from Georgia to Delaware will compete at the First Street Jetty for the right to advance to the September Eastern competition in Hatteras.
How many qualify depends on the number of surfers in each division.
Competition in 16 divisions for surfing, bodyboarding, knee boarding and long boarding will begin at 7 a.m. each day and run through 4 p.m. today and 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Finals should conclude sometime Sunday morning through early afternoon.
Male and female surfers range in age from under-10 through over-55.
Of the nine districts competing, central North Carolina is the biggest. Virginia is second with 52 competitors.
``We've had some fronts pass through and hopefully there will be some nice swells for the competitors,'' Virginia District president Pat Clark said. ``We've got a band playing Friday afternoon and we're trying to make it a fun event for everybody coming down.'' by CNB
