DON'T CHEW TOBACCO

For those who have quit smoking - congratulations!

For those who have given up smoking for chewing or dipping - dumb!

While their chances of developing lung cancer have gone down, their risks for heart problems, mouth cancer and throat cancer have gone up.

Dipping and chewing mean spitting. Ugh!

According to the Federal Trade Commission, in 1994 the tobacco industry spent $4 million more on advertising smokeless tobacco than in 1992, and the sales rose by more than $100 million. This advertising is aimed at young people, giving the impression that chewing tobacco is the latest thing and that all the ``jocks'' do it. It makes me angry when our young people are singled out and harmed like this.

Let's see ads by local and nationally known athletes denying this impression.
