X-FEST PROMISES TO BE A DAY OF GOOD MUSIC

IF YOUR MOM wouldn't let you go to Lollapalooza and Woodstock '94 was just plain out of the question, yet your urge to attend an all-day music festival has not diminished, then 96X and Cellar Door have the cure for what ails you.

It's the X-Fest.

Just in case you've had your head in a bucket or owned only a broken radio for the past two years, 96X (WROX, 96.1 FM) is the closest thing we have to a cool radio station. They play a mix that very nearly mimics the ``it's cool, it's hip, we'll wear it out'' style that the MTV Buzz Bin has adopted.

But I will give them credit for looking out for our musical best interests, a theory recently reinforced by the X-Fest.

I'm going to pretend that you know nothing about the X-Fest, although with the saturation of the airwaves, that's hard to imagine. I spoke with Mike Davye, promotions director for 96X, and tried to get an idea of what would be going on. They are having seven bands; it's your average outdoor festival, including carnival-type games, food, merchandise and possibly a tattoo artist.

Cool.

Bush is the headliner. Smaller bands playing will be Call Fields, Wax, Phunk Junkeez, Cold Water Flat, No Use For a Name and 96X music director and disc jockey Sara Trexler's band Velour.

Tickets, to be sold in advance by Ticketmaster, are $9.96 for the first 1,500 sold and $12.96 after that, not including Ticketmaster's $1.25 per-ticket service charge. The show starts at noon May 20 at the Strawberry Banks Motor Inn in Hampton.

Hello. Strawberry Banks is a motel. Since when do they have concerts at a motel? I guess Strawberry Banks has some big field connected to it or something. Call the motel at 723-6061 for directions. For more information about the X-Fest, call 96X at 622-9696.

Well, there you have it: a nice, well-planned, local festival that your mommy will more than likely let you attend. And if she says no, then you have two weeks to persuade her. MEMO: If you want to tip off Alicia Luma to what's happening, call Infoline at
