A 22-year-old Army woman and a 21-year-old Navy man were killed Saturday when their motorcycle crashed into a van stopped at an intersection just east of Yorktown Middle School, police reported.
Karolina E.A. Lantz, a Newport News resident stationed at Fort Eustis, died at the scene, spokeswoman Tammy Van Dame said.
Daniel M. Bahre, who was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier Enterprise, was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he died a short time later.
The crash occurred at 6:12 p.m. The couple, riding a 1986 Yamaha, were traveling along Route 17 South near Route 238. The pair was traveling with another couple on a second motorcycle when the foursome passed a state trooper operating a radar, Van Dame said.
The trooper estimated their speed at 100 mph, Van Dame said. He attempted to follow, but before he could reach the two motorcycles, the Yamaha crashed into a 1989 Dodge van sitting in the left northbound lane at Cook Road.
The bike deflected off the van's windshield and part of it struck a 1991 Chevrolet van behind the Dodge, Van Dame said. The bike then flew more than 130 feet before it fell onto Route 17's northbound shoulder.
