It had the feel of a marketing campaign for a Mexican beer company and not the celebration of the legendary Mexican victory over French forces during the Battle of Puebla in 1862.
Still, the Cinco de Mayo celebration at the 24th Street Park last Saturday had a little something for everyone: jaunty South American tunes courtesy of the house sound system and, later, live numbers from a group of Jimmy Buffett admirers.
There was even a reggae band in attendance, just to add a little variety to the celebration that unfolded under beautiful blue skies warmed by a bright spring sun that helped nudge beer sales along.
The party, complete with Mexican food, marked the first of what promises to be a season of parties covering every imaginable taste, attitude and hobby. Next up, the May Beach Music Festival, from May 19 to 21, will feature shaggers from all over shuffling and spinning to old chestnuts from The Drifters, Chairman of the Board and the Supremes starring Mary Wilson.
