On May 1, Del. Jerrauld Jones, Councilmen Paul Riddick and Herb Collins and I appeared on the steps of City Hall to advise of our collective withdrawal from the Rainbow Coalition of Norfolk and our joinder with the historically African-American political-action committee known as the Concerned Citizens of Norfolk.
During the course of the press conference, we indicated our philosophical differences with other personalities.
However, the newspaper article covering the press conference on May 2 would give some readers the impression that there were personal references to matters which we deemed unnecessary for discussion at the press conference. I refer specifically to the reporter's reference to previous legal difficulties of Bishop L. E. Willis. At no time during the press conference did any of the African-American elected officials or I make any reference to such difficulties.
The purpose of this missive is to clear the record with regard to what might be interpreted as a personal attack upon L. E. Willis. I am confident that the juxtaposition of words in the article which would cause some to believe that such personal references were made was an unintended result of that reporter's writing style.
