WILLIAM E. MATTHEWS

William Emerson ``Bill'' Matthews, 63, of the first block of Independence St., died May 9, 1995, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mr. Matthews was a native of Jones County, N.C. He was retired as a crane operator from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was also retired from the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Matthews, and a brother, Richard E. Matthews.

Survivors include a son, Robert Eilenberger of Portsmouth, and a granddaughter, Courtney Eilenberger; two sisters, Elizabeth Noland of Ruckersville, Va., and Marie M. Daughtrey of Carrollton; three brothers, Bernice C. Matthews, Joseph L. Matthews and Kenneth B. Matthews, all of Portsmouth; three nieces; six nephews; four great-nieces; and one great-nephew.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland, by the Rev. T.M. Frye. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
