JOSEPH L. SIMPKINS

Joseph Lawrence ``Larry'' Simpkins, 60, of the 1300 block of Branch Road, died Saturday, May 6, 1995, in DePaul Medical Center.

Mr. Simpkins was born in Birmingham, Ala., and was a member of Sardis Baptist Church, Birmingham. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 years as a PO1. He was also retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 12 years in Shop 64 as a woodworker. He just recently retired from Kee's Business College as a maintenance tech with eight years. He earned the following medals while in the service: the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie M. Simpkins of Norfolk; daughters and sons, Ms. Fern Denise Williams, Ms. Rhoda A. Filhoil and Mr. Ronald G. Simpkins, all of Norfolk, and Mr. Reginald D. Simpkins of Chesapeake; five grandchildren, Natasha L. Simpkins and Ronald A. Simpkins of Norfolk, Reginald D. Simpkins of Chesapeake, Keosha D. Williams and Joseph J. Williams of Norfolk; mother, Mrs. Osie W. Simpkins; brother, Mr. James O. Simpkins; niece, Ms. Alison S. Smith; nephew, Mr. Jason P. Simpkins; one aunt, Mrs. M. Terry; one uncle, Mr. U. Terry, all of Birmingham, Ala.; mother-in-law, Mrs. Johnnie M. Gladden of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a special daughter-in-law, Vida M. Simpkins of Chesapeake, and a god-child, Kristopher Smith of Brooklyn; and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. James P. Simpkins.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk, by the Rev. Lester Frye. A wake will be held on Friday, May 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will assemble at 1376 Branch Road. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
