WARNER OK AFTER BEING HOSPITALIZED

U.S. Sen. John W. Warner was reported resting comfortably at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center on Tuesday after a weekend bout with what his staff called a ``transient irregular heartbeat'' and ``an acute diarrheal illness.''

Virginia's senior senator went to the hospital in suburban Maryland on Sunday evening after diarrheal problems that began Saturday did not improve. Doctors decided to admit him and discovered the heart irregularity during their examinations, a Warner aide said.

Warner apparently had no chest pains or other signs of a heart attack. Doctors determined that he was suffering from an intestinal infection and that the heart irregularity, which has disappeared, was related to it, said Susan Magill, the senator's chief of staff.

Doctors say Warner, 68, will make a full recovery, Magill said. He expects to be discharged within a few days and to be back at work next week, she added.

Warner has health insurance through Blue Cross and Blue Shield, which will reimburse the Navy for the cost of his care, Magill said. Facilities at Bethesda are made available to all members of Congress, as well as the president and vice president. Warner is a former sailor, Marine and secretary of the Navy, so the hospital was a natural choice for him.

A Republican, Warner is in his third Senate term and is making plans to seek re-election in 1996. by CNB
