Alf and Ramona Mapp have been chosen as the 1995 recipients of the Gladstone M. Hill Friend of the Arts Award.
The Mapps' commitment to the arts is exemplified by their active participation for more than 30 years in the civic and cultural life of Portsmouth, of Virginia and of the nation.
The couple have been prominent in the city's cultural affairs and active in many organizations.
They are co-authors of ``Portsmouth,'' a pictorial history of the city.
Alf Mapp, a best-selling author of historical books and teacher at Old Dominion University, has served as chairman of the Portsmouth Museums and Fine Arts Commission and the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. He was named a national Portsmouth Notable, a Great Citizen of Hampton Roads and Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Ramona Mapp has headed the Portsmouth Public Library board and served as president of the Tidewater Child Care Association.
Together they have received the National Service Award of the Family Foundation of America.
The award will be presented to the Mapps at the artists reception for the 25th annual Seawall Art Show scheduled 7:30-9:30 p.m. May 27. ILLUSTRATION: File photo
