JAMES C. OLDFIELD

James C. ``Barney'' Oldfield, 78, of Mallard Cove, died Thursday, May 11, 1995, at his residence.

Mr. Oldfield was a native of Fremont, Iowa. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Kill Devil Hills; a past president of Duck Woods Golf Club and a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Oldfield graduated with distinction from the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1939, and was serving aboard the Battleship West Virginia when she was attacked in Pearl Harbor. Mr. Oldfield also retired from General Dynamics in 1970 as a naval architect. After moving to the Outer Banks, he owned and operated Oldfield Contracting Co., which built Acorn Structure Homes of Attleboro, Mass. He was the son of the late Wallace G. Oldfield and the late Mrs. Mable Chester Oldfield. He was preceded in death by two wives, Helen K. Oldfield and Mildred Carmody Oldfield.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret ``Peggy'' Held Oldfield of the home; a son, John Oldfield and his wife, Lois of Stoughton, Mass.; a daughter, Mary O. Howard and her husband, Ronald of Raleigh; two sisters, Luella Spence of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ellen Hester of Ida Grove, Iowa; and a grandson, Justin Oldfield of Stoughton, Mass.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church by Father Terrence Collins. Interment will follow in Southern Shores Cemetery. A Christian prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday in Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo. The family suggests that in addition to flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Building Fund.
