I must admit to a sense of astonishment at Bill Clinton's remarks at the University of Michigan's commencement exercise.
Clinton's statement that a person cannot claim to ``love your country but hate your government'' is yet another example of either his poor choice of speech writers or, if the thoughts were truly his own, his stupifying thoughtlessness.
I'm certain that during the 1930s and '40s, many people in Germany, Italy and Spain did not subscribe to the actions of their respective repressive governments led by Hitler, Mussolini and Franco. Had they been able to, wouldn't they have spoken out loudly against their respective governments? Would their speech have been considered unpatriotic by Mr. Clinton's standards?
