WHEN THE summer sun comes out, concert halls in Hampton Roads go dark. With the exception of a few outdoor shows, the Virginia Symphony, Virginia Opera and area chamber music ensembles hibernate until September.

But within a few hours' drive are music festivals sure to please the most discerning listener. This is a selective list of events in the mid-Atlantic region plus notable festivals nationwide.
