Arthur Freeman died May 11, 1995.
Mr. Freeman was born in Norfolk. He was president and business manager for the AFL-CIO for more than 30 years, was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, The Metts Bible school, Phi Beta Fraternity, was the first black councilman for the city of Norfolk and was very active in sports and religion with youth in the city of Norfolk. He was a graduate of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., participated in football, was C.Z.A.A. boxing champ, former teacher and coach of football and basketball at Pomonkey High School, Pomonkey, Md., served in the armed forces in World War II as a sergeant, served as campaign manager for former lieutenant governor of Virginia, Henry Howell, was the first black delegate elected to the democratic committee, 2nd district, was the first black elected to the Norfolk City Democratic Committee, 2 terms, and formed the Tidewater Tee Corp.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Freeman; two daughters, Charon Freeman and Cheryl Seals, both of Virginia Beach; four sons, Harry Freeman 3rd of Raleigh, N.C., Baron Freeman of Virginia Beach, Keith Freeman of Norfolk and Shavel Freeman of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Ambritt Pryor of District Heights, Md.; a brother, Harry E. Freeman of Forestville, Md.; and six grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. John Foster. Arrangements by Graves Funeral Home. The family will assemble at the residence the day of the service. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. the day of the service. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church.
