A fire sparked by a workman's torch was blamed for lighting a blaze that destroyed 10 junked cars and forced police to close part of North Military Highway for more than two hours Saturday.
The blaze broke out about noon at Ingram Auto Parts in the 3400 block of N. Military Highway.
No serious injuries were reported and firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. One concern was that water runoff from fighting the blaze might carry pollutants into nearby Lake Whitehurst, a city reservoir. Authorities were monitoring the runoff Saturday night and there were no indications any pollutants were getting into the water supply.
Authorities estimated damage to the cars at $8,000. by CNB
