WWBT-TV, the NBC affiliate in Richmond, was named Saturday as Virginia's Outstanding News Operation of the Year for television.
WWBT was among several stations honored by the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters at the group's annual conference.
WVTF-FM, the Roanoke public radio station, was named Outstanding News Operation among metro radio stations, while WFLS-AM/FM, Fredericksburg, won the top honor in non-metro radio.
Metro includes all radio stations in or licensed to a city with a population of 50,000 or more. Non-metro includes radio stations in cities with fewer than 50,000 residents.
Individuals recognized for outstanding effort were Craig Butterworth of WRVA-AM in Richmond, Rob Graham of WINA-AM/WQMZ-FM in Charlottesville and Patricia DiVincenzo of WTKR-TV in Norfolk.
The Douglas Southall Freeman Award went to WRIC-TV in Richmond, WRVA-AM and WINA. The award recognized the stations for the most effective reporting in the public interest.
In all, the VAPB awards honored work in nine radio categories and 11 television categories, including news, sports, features, photography, documentaries and editorials.
Newschannel 8, a Springfield-based cable TV news operation, won first place for sports coverage.
WTAR-AM in Virginia Beach and WINA won in the radio divisions.
WINA captured the most honors, taking home five first-place awards.
Another first-place award went to WTKR-TV for its feature on black Republicans. by CNB
