Bill Pulsipher pitched a complete game Monday to lead the Norfolk Tides to a 3-2 International League victory over the struggling Ottawa Lynx.
The Tides swept the four-game series and extended their winning streak to six games, which equals their season high set between April 25 and May 1. They also complete a successful 11-game road trip at 8-3.
Meanwhile, the Lynx established a club record with their seventh straight loss.
Pulsipher, now 5-2 and rated the New York Mets No. 1 prospect, didn't allow a walk and struck out six. He also chipped in offensively with a base hit and RBI and completed a couple of nice defensive plays.
``I was really glad to get a win on the road,'' said Pulsipher, who entered Monday's game at 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA on enemy turf compared to 3-0 and 0.35 at home. It was also his first victory since April 30.
``There's no explanation for my road woes. Last year it was the complete reverse. I couldn't win at home.''
Pulsipher said it wasn't his best performance this season.
``I didn't have my best fastball so I relied a lot on my changeup,'' said the 21-year-old lefthander. ``But I really like close games. It just seems everyone's more involved. It gives you a lot of confidence to win one like this.''
The Tides grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead on shortstop Rey Ordonez's double to left with one out. He scored on a single by first baseman Omar Garcia.
Pulsipher reached first on a solid single and second baseman Edwin Alicea was safe on a sacrifice bunt attempt to open the third. Pulsipher was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and Alicea scored the Tides' only run on Aaron Ledesma's two out RBI single.
After one out in the fourth, catcher Alberto Castillo singled and went to third on centerfielder Jarvis Brown's double.
Pulsipher drove home Castillo on a sacrifice fly on a 3-0 count to put the Tides ahead, 3-0.
Norfolk returns to Harbor Park tonight to begin a three-game series against the Syracuse Chiefs. ILLUSTRATION: GAMEWATCH
