Commonwealth Gas Services has asked the Virginia State Corporation Commission for a rate increase. If approved, the average Commonwealth Gas customers' monthly bill will increase by 12 percent from $51.07 to $57.25. The increase would produce $15 million in added revenues. The state commission must approve the rate hike. Officials for the Richmond-based company said they need to cover rising operating and capital improvement costs. Commonwealth Gas is one of the state's largest natural gas utilities, serving nearly 160,000 customers in 81 communities, including parts of Hampton Roads. by CNB
