Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair Tuesday, with tailor blues comprising the majority of fish taken.
Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier caught a few blues and lots of sand perch throughout the day. Plenty of tailor blues, some spot, trout and a few Spanish mackerel were landed on Avalon Pier.
Nags Head Pier reported good catches of 1- to 2-pound Spanish mackerel during the morning, and some blues and spot later in the day. Fishermen on Jennette's Pier landed several Spanish mackerel, bluefish and small bottom fish. Blues and a few Spanish mackerel were taken off Outer Banks Pier early in the morning. Anglers caught quite a few small spot and sand perch later in the day.
On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported slow fishing, with only a handful of Spanish mackerel and bluefish taken. Fishing also was slow at Avon Pier, where the water was crystal clear. Frisco Pier fishermen caught little during the morning, but a good run of Spanish mackerel developed around noon on the falling tide.
Surf fishing from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was fair, with some small spot, mullet and a few trout landed.
Surfcasters along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton caught some blues after first light and a few sea mullet during the day.
No drum were caught Monday night at Cape Point. Daytime fishermen caught a few blues and Spanish mackerel at Cape Point on Tuesday.
Tuesday's yellowfin fishing was fair to good southeast of Oregon Inlet. A few dolphin and wahoo also appeared in catches. Inshore trolling around the inlet was slow, but bottom-fishing was good. Headboats reported good catches of sea bass and tautog.
A number of blue marlin were seen, but few were hooked by bluewater fishermen off Hatteras on Tuesday. Blue Marlin releases were recorded by the ``Lucky Chip'' and the ``Sea Witch.'' Most of the action was good between the 40000 and 40300 Loran lines. Dolphin fishing was good in the area, and a few tuna and wahoo also were taken.
Pier fishing for king mackerel and cobia should improve in the Hatteras area as water temperatures climb.
