JONES GOES TO METS, EVERETT IS SENT DOWN

The liquid Tides roster changed a little again Tuesday when outfielder Carl Everett joined the team from the Mets and Chris Jones was promoted.

``I'm glad CJ was called up. He did a great job for us,'' Tides manager Toby Harrah said. Jones was batting .333, seventh-best in the International League, and led the league with 12 doubles. ``It makes you feel great. That's like Christmas for these players.''

Everett, 23, arrives after a disappointing stay in New York. The starting rightfielder after Ryan Thompson was injured, Everett was batting .193 with three home runs and six RBIs in 17 games when the Mets sent him down.

The move helped reduce the Mets roster to 25 players from 28, as every major league club had to do Sunday. The Mets also put infielder Bill Spiers on the disabled list and waived catcher Brook Fordyce, who was claimed by the Cleveland Indians. Fordyce played all of the last two seasons with the Tides.

``Everett is here to play everyday and get himself back to the big leagues,'' Harrah said. ``He has tremendous talent. Hopefully he'll get squared away and get to feeling good about himself again. I'm looking forward to seeing him play.''

Everett was acquired over the winter from the Florida Marlins for second baseman Quilvio Veras. A swift righthanded hitter with power, Everett had two previous stints in the big leagues with the Marlins. He hit .105 in 11 games in 1993 and .216 in 16 games last season.

THOMPSON RETURNS: Thompson joined the Tides on Saturday on a 20-day rehabilitation assignment for an elbow injury suffered near the end of spring training. An all-star with the Tides in 1993, Thompson had one hit in his first 12 at-bats entering Tuesday.

DEBUT DELAYED: Phenom righthander Jason Isringhausen's slated Harbor Park debut was delayed from Tuesday to Thursday because of tightness he experienced in his shoulder before his first Triple-A start last Thursday.

All Isringhausen, 22, did was blank Syracuse on four hits over 7 2/3 innings and strike out nine.

``I guess it was mainly adrenaline,'' Isringhausen said.

That and an overpowering fastball and curve, Harrah said.

``Dominating,'' Harrah said. ``Just dominating.''

WARD'S A CHIEF: Reliever Duane Ward, so important to Toronto's World Series runs in 1992 and '93, has joined Syracuse on a rehabilitation assignment. Ward, 30, missed last season with rotator cuff trouble. He won two games in the '92 Series and won one and saved two in the '93 Series, after saving 45 games in the regular season.
