Virginia Beach police officers salute during the final moments of a
memorial service held Wednesday at the Municipal Center for officers
who have died in the line of duty. Del. Robert F. McDonnell,
R-Virginia Beach; Mayor Meyera Oberndorf and Police Chief Charles R.
Wall were guest speakers. The service included a roll call of all
officers killed in the line of duty, the passing of a riderless
horse, the playing of ``Amazing Grace'' on bagpipes, a flyover, a
21-gun salute and the playing of taps. Since 1923, eight city police
officers have died in the line of duty. ``The Virginia Beach Police
Department has been fortunate not to have had an officer killed
since 1991,'' spokesman Lou Thurston said. At right: Lois Hayden
puts a carnation on a wreath in memory of William D. Black, who died
in 1979. Hayden is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police
Auxiliary.
