At least nine pupils became ill during a track meet in 94-degree weather Thursday at St. Gregory's School, police said.
The temperature was one degree short of a record set in 1877.
Several children, between 8 and 12 years old, collapsed with heat problems. Three were taken to local hospitals, police and fire officials said.
None of the cases was believed to be serious, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.
At least six fire and rescue units responded to a call from the school in the 5300 block of Virginia Beach Blvd., after the children, from several Catholic schools participating in a track-and-field meet, experienced problems with the heat, police said.
The first child became ill just after 2 p.m.
The first rescue workers to reach the scene asked for help as other children collapsed or got sick.
Those who were not taken to hospitals were treated at the school and released to their parents. by CNB
