A man trying to kick-start his Harley Davidson motorcycle was killed when a handgun fell out of his vest and fired when it hit the pavement, police said.
The bullet struck the 34-year-old motorcyclist in the left side of the abdomen late Sunday. A police officer and an off-duty Chesapeake firefighter tried to save him. He was pronounced dead at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital's Trauma Center.
Police identified the motorcyclist as David K. Fultz of the 700 block of Cottonwood Court.
The shooting happened in the 5600 block of Normandy Ave., in the Avalon Terrace section. Police said that Fultz had a .38-caliber Derringer tucked into his leather vest but that the gun tumbled out when he tried to start the motorcycle.
Sunday's was the second serious accidental shooting in the city in five days.
Thursday, a 16-year-old Tallwood High School girl was badly wounded when a 15-year-old friend pointed a .45-caliber pistol at her and pulled the trigger. The bullet struck her in the abdomen.
The gun owner apparently thought the gun was unloaded but a round was in the chamber, police said.
The victim, Tikahi Carter, is recovering.
