What a deal. Here's a chance to take a walk, play golf, play tennis, hobnob with sports stars, enjoy a buffet and bid on sports items and art, all while doing something good for Chesapeake Care Clinic.
The event will take place June 3-5 at various South Hampton Roads locations to raise funds for Chesapeake's only free clinic.
``No one will be making any money off of this weekend,'' said Sarita Ranger, who is in charge of publicity. ``All of the proceeds will be used to help the clinic.''
The clinic, located on Sparrow Road, was founded by Dr. Juan Montero. Staffed by volunteer doctors and nurses, it helps those who can't afford any medical insurance or who can't qualify for medical insurance due to pre-existing conditions.
``We take care of those people who fall through the cracks of medical care and insurance,'' Ranger said. ``We offer a full range of medical care, including an emergency dental clinic. We take care of those people, for example, who have no medical insurance because they've lost their jobs. That could happen to anybody, and that's why we work so hard for the clinic.''
In two weeks Chesapeake people and other South Hampton Roads residents will be given the opportunity to work hard for the clinic by simply walking, golfing, playing tennis, enjoying food and bidding.
To start things off, there will be a Walk-A-Thon taking place June 3 from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration for the three-mile walk begins at 8 a.m. behind the Chesapeake Central Library. The route starts in front of Chesapeake City Hall and will snake all through the city's municipal complex, said organizer Becky Bulls of Chesapeake General Hospital's Lifestyle Fitness Center.
``We'll have prizes for all ages along with a bake sale and some raffles,'' Bulls said. ``This should be fun for the entire family.''
The fee to participate in the Walk-A-Thon is $10 per person for those 18 and older, $5 for ages 12-18 and children younger than 12 are free.
Contact Bulls at 482-6114 or 482-4266 to register or for more information.
After the walk, anyone for tennis?
On June 4 the second annual Celebrity Tennis Classic will take place at the Greenbrier Country Club, sponsor of the competition.
Organizers are expecting several local and regional celebrities and tennis stars, including Kelly Wright of WAVY-TV 10 and Julie Tupper of Tennis Week magazine.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. on the day of the tournament. The ``double mixed scrambles'' go from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 1:30 to 4 p.m. The fee is $60 per player.
If the good life is more your thing, then enjoy the third annual William Fuller Welcoming Reception and Auction, taking place June 4 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Airport Hilton hotel.
The event is a reception to honor celebrities, sponsors and contributors to the golf tournament scheduled for Monday at Cypress Point Country Club.
For $25 you'll be able to mingle with the many sports and local celebrities that will participate in the next day's golf competition. Featured will be live and silent auctions for art, collectibles and other treasures.
``You'll be able to eat at one of the best buffets in the area,'' Ranger said. ``It will have ice sculptures, food designs and good food. And the auction will have some of the finest sports memorabilia one can find. We'll have genuine autographed items including boxing gloves, footballs, basketballs and jerseys. And for the non-sports person we'll have trips, fashions, all kinds of art, gifts, services and theater tickets. We'll have something for everybody.''
And finally the entire weekend will cap off with a grand golf tournament, the William Fuller-Chesapeake Care Celebrity Golf Classic, taking place beginning at 9 a.m., June 5, at the Cypress Point Country Club in Virginia Beach.
For $300 per person, entrants will be able to golf with a celebrity sports person on their team. The fee includes two tickets to Sunday's reception and two tickets to all of Monday's activities.
Each foursome will also have an assigned celebrity as a fifth person on their team.
The golf package includes breakfast and lunch and at 5 p.m., entertainment by Bill Deal and Fat Ammon's Band followed by dinner in the club.
Some of the sports celebrities taking part in Monday's golf classic include William Fuller, Indian River High School grad, now with the Philadelphia Eagles; Barry Parkhill, coach and former University of Virginia basketball player; Larry Griffin, Deep Creek High School alumnus, now with the Steelers; Darren Perry, Great Bridge High graduate, now with the Steelers; Dennis McEwen of the Hampton Roads Admirals; Jeff Capel, ODU men's basketball coach; Joe Smith, Maury High standout and University of Maryland star now going into the NBA; along with several famous and popular Redskins veterans and current NFL players with the Rams, 49ers, Bears, Falcons, Broncos, Browns, Packers and Patriots.
