RECENTLY, the Beta Theta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. this week presented the 18th annual Men of Tomorrow Showcase.
Generally, when young black teenagers are seen in the media, they are linked with drugs and violence. But Beta Theta Zeta presented the positive side of the black community in a program honoring 20 young men from Hampton Roads high schools.
The young men were nominated by community and church leaders as well as teachers and sorority members. Good character, scholarship and a positive attitude were the selection criteria.
The program also featured an honorary Man of Tomorrow, Kevin G. Harris, senior vice president and manager of community development for Centura Bank of North Carolina. Harris was chosen as a role model for this year's participants.
The program, which began in 1977, sponsors trips to the state General Assembly to witness government in action. It also provides financial aid and college awareness seminars.
All of the young men received scholarships, but there were also special award winners. The first-place winner was Michael A. Finnie of Indian River High School, who received a $1000 scholarship. The second-place prize, a $700 scholarship went to James F. Gaye Jr., of Maury High School. The third-place winner, Roderick Richardson of I.C. Norcom High School, was the recipient of a $500 scholarship. Mr. Congeniality went to Lorenzo C. Artis of Deep Creek High School.
