ABRUPT DIP IN WATER TEMPERATURES SLOWS FISHING FROM NORTHERN PIERS

Pier action along the northern beaches slowed Thursday, as water temperatures dropped abruptly.

A few small spot and mullet were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier. Anglers on Avalon Pier landed small blues, spot and gray trout, most of which were throw-backs.

On Nags Head Pier, skates, a few mullet, very small spot and a couple of bluefish were taken. Jennettes Pier and Outer Banks Pier reported only a few bottom fish, blues and skates, landed.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier fishermen had a good morning catch of sea mullet, along with some nice gray trout. Avon Pier anglers caught a handful of sand perch, small croakers, sharks and skates.

Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier, with a few bottom fish landed. In addition, a couple of big blues were landed from the end of the pier by anglers fishing for king mackerel.

Surfcasters along the northern beach area caught some small bottom fish and blues from deeper sloughs on the incoming tide.

Surfcasters on Hatteras Island landed small blues, sea mullet, croakers and skates between Rodanthe and Buxton.

One drum, some gray trout and a few Spanish mackerel were taken Wednesday night at Cape Point. Anglers fishing Cape Point during the day Thursday caught mainly tailor blues.

Some tailor blues and a few big blues have been taken during the day along the beach from Cape Point south to Hatteras Inlet. Some small bottom fish and gray trout have been beached at night.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent Thursday, with Spanish mackerel and bonito plentiful. Some cobia were taken. Headboats operating in the area landed fair catches of sea bass.

Yellowfin tuna and dolphin catches were fair to good off Oregon Inlet. Action was spread out, but the best fishing was reported from between the 40860 and the 40925 Loran lines.

Sailfish were released by ``Sea Jay IV,'' the ``Hustler,'' the ``Missboo'' and the ``Capt. B.C.'' Some blue marlin were released by the ``Fantastic'' and the ``Fight-N-Lady.''

Bluewater anglers fishing off Hatteras Island caught some big dolphin, scattered tuna and a few wahoo. Several white marlin and sailfish were released, and quite a few were seen but not hooked.

Some good runs of Spanish mackerel should develop along the Hatteras beaches over the weekend, provided the winds remain light and the water remains clear and warm.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 59 degrees Thursday. by CNB
