The Dare County Arts Council has named Hutchins Allen & Company, a Nags Head accounting firm, as the winner of its 1995 ``Supporter of the Arts'' award. Arts council president-elect Jill Bennett presented Sandra Allen and Freddie Hutchins with a painting by John ``Possum'' Silver at the council's annual meeting Thursday.
The meeting at Penguin Isle restaurant in Nags Head commemorated the council's 20th anniversary. Pat Fearing, Thomas White Jr., Irvin Aldridge and Martin Kellogg Jr. received special recognition for their roles in founding the Sea and Sounds Arts Council in 1975. In 1988, Sea and Sounds changed its name to the Dare County Arts Council.
More than 85 people heard the keynote speech by Yvonne Sabine, director of council and panel operations at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.
NEA, which supports not-for-profit arts with grants to individuals and organizations throughout America, spends 64 cents for every American citizen, said Sabine. Canada and France spend $32 per person; Germany spends $27.
Great nations recognize that ``not-for-profit arts are vital to a society's well-being and that they could not survive without public patronage,'' said Sabine.
Thirty-five percent of all NEA funds are given directly to states, said Sabine, and thousands of dollars in other grants have been given to individuals and arts organizations in North Carolina. Some of those funds help bring the North Carolina Symphony and other arts programs to Dare County.
Outgoing president Dawn Enochs announced that the council is sponsoring a public performance by the North Carolina Symphony at Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island at 8 p.m. July 1. Tickets ($8, adults) are available in advance at Manteo Booksellers or Birthday Suits, Nags Head.
Clair Sutton, Kadra Bradford, David Bundy and Tracey Midgett were elected to three-years terms on the arts council board of directors. Officers elected were: Jill Bennett, president; Mary Ellen Riddle, president-elect/board development; Susan Clissold, treasurer; and Vicki Loy, secretary. by CNB
