Nick Honeycutt struck out seven in a complete-game three-hitter as Greenbrier Christian blanked Isle of Wight, 3-0, to advance to the VISBA Division I title game for the fourth straight season.
Greenbrier scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the sixth. John Hudgins reached on an error, stole second with two outs, went to third on a Dwayne Hall wild pitch and scored on third baseman Brent Rose's error.
Isle of Wight's lone scoring chance in the fourth was erased by a botched suicide squeeze and a Honeycutt strikeout, both with the bases loaded.
Broadwater 9, Colonial Beach 0: Nick Howard, scattered three hits, struck out eight, and improved to 8-0 as the Vikings (22-0) blanked the Drifters. With the win, Broadwater advances to the Division I title game versus Greenbrier Christian today at Old Dominion at 4 p.m.
Broadwater took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ben Willis' single drove in Travis Fulk, who had singled leading off the game. Jason Poulson and Neil Gilliss each knocked in two runs an inning later. Each member of the Vikings' lineup had a run scored.
In the Division II semifinals:
Nansemond-Suffolk 7, Fuqua 2: Walton Bondurant tossed six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out seven, the Saints (18-3) defeated Fuqua.
Nansemond-Suffolk took a 2-0 lead in the first on Mike Vizcaino's RBI double and Mark Fowler's sacrifice fly.
Fuqua's Johnny Lesuer broke up Bondurant's no-hit bid in the fourth, but in the Saints' half, Bondurant singled and scored. The Saints chased Fuqua starter Jon Martin in the fifth on Fowler's RBI single to left, scoring Ryan Blythe, who led off with a triple.
Nansemond-Suffolk added two insurance runs in the sixth. Jason Strickland singled leading off and Derek Riebel followed with a double off the leftfield wall.
Catholic 10, Lynchburg Christian 6: Aaron Prickett (8-2) threw multiple wild pitches, balked, walked five and saw his defense commit four errors. However, the senior righthander battled and hung tough as nails to collect his eighth win as the Crusaders (20-5) rallied to win.
Lynchburg built a 2-0 lead in the first. Ben Schramm scored when Crusader shortstop Mike Holdcroft booted a Troy Campbell grounder and Jason Suitt stole home on the back end of a double steal. Bulldogs first baseman Phil Morris trotted home from third an inning later on Prickett's balk, for a 3-0 lead.
Down, 4-2, in the top of the fourth, Catholic scored five runs on no hits in the bottom of the frame. The Crusaders used every possible way to score - five Bulldog errors, a perfectly executed suicide-squeeze, four stolen bases and three walks. Lynchburg made 10 errors.
Catholic will play Nansemond-Suffolk for the title today at Old Dominion at 1 p.m. by CNB
