Some anglers spend a season, others a lifetime, trying to catch a fish big enough to earn a citation award from the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. Not so Jeff Ashton of Virginia Beach.
In one glorious day, Ashton earned citations in three categories, for a released red drum, a released black drum and a boated red drum weighing 50 pounds. He was near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, aboard the boat Zeeba.
The trip also produced a red drum release for Siamak Beheshtzadeh and a 43 1/2-pounder for Babak Beheshtzadeh, both of Virginia Beach.
Elsewhere, blue and white marlin staged strong showings off Hatteras, while the season's first bluefin tuna were boated off Oregon Inlet, near Nags Head.
Perhaps the weekend's most exceptional catch was registered by Brian Horsley, a light-tackle guide at Nags Head, who boated a 58-pound cobia on a fly rod. He was aboard the boat Flat Out.
On the freshwater scene, Buddy Bancroft of Virginia Beach earned a Virginia citation with an 8-6 largemouth bass, caught at Western Branch Reservoir in Suffolk.
