When school Superintendent Roy D. Nichols Jr. reassigned principals at 16 schools last summer after a year on the job, he said that such annual shuffling - one of the most massive in memory - might become routine. It's a good way to keep people fresh, he said.
Nichols followed through on that philosophy at last week's School Board meeting, announcing that 11 schools will have new principals in the fall.
``I really think if a person stays in a job for too many years they become complacent, and they need a change,'' Nichols said.
No one is losing a job, Nichols said. Some of the movement is a result of retirement or have been transferred into jobs ``where we think they can better serve the school system.''
Two current principals have been recruited to fill administrative positions. William T. Delk, now principal at Northside Middle, has been hired as senior director of pupil personnel services. He replaces Leo V. Williams Jr., who is retiring.
Jack H. Leslie will move from principal of Norview Middle to a coordinator in pupil personnel services.
These are the other changes in assignments:
Deborah L. Mansfield, now principal of Calcott Elementary, will move to Chesterfield Heights, which administration officials hope to turn into a math, science and technology magnet school using federal grant money.
Frank L. Steadman, now principal of Azalea Gardens Middle, will move to Norview Middle.
Charles A. Stevenson, now principal of Chesterfield Heights Elementary, will move to Sherwood Forest Elementary.
DeLores E. Ray Wilson, now principal of Campostella Elementary, will move to Poplar Halls Elementary.
Frances M. Dugan, now assistant principal of Campostella, will become principal.
Robert J. Grant, now assistant principal of Blair Middle, will become principal of Rosemont Middle.
Winifred L. Payton, now assistant principal of Suburban Park Elementary, will become principal of St. Helena Elementary.
Noah V. Rogers, now assistant principal of Maury High, will become principal of Azalea Gardens Middle.
Timothy M. Sweeney, now assistant principal of Granby High, will become principal of Northside Middle.
Lonnie R. Sykes, now assistant principal of Willard Elementary, will become principal of Calcott Elementary.
