York pitcher Amy Morgan, who dominated Bay Rivers District hitters until suffering a rib injury, was named the softball player of the year for the straight season by league coaches.
Morgan's injury has forced her off the mound and into the outfield the past three weeks. Prior to that, she compiled an 11-1 record and a 0.80 ERA with 91 strikeouts.
Morgan was joined on the first team by fellow Falcons Regina Straight (second base), Kelly Sambuchi (catcher) and Jennifer Welch (outfield). In addition, York's Allen Thompson was named the league's coach of the year.
The Falcons went 13-1 in the league and 17-1 overall, winning regular-season and district tournament titles.
Teams from the former York District dominated the balloting, as Poquoson also had four first-teamers: shortstop Jennifer Davison, outfielder Stephanie Andres, pitcher Leslie Inge and utility player Elizabeth Leeson.
Nansemond River, which finished in a tie for second during the regular season and then came in second to York in the league tournament, placed three players on the all-district team: first baseman Angie Gatling, third baseman Heather Behrends and outfielder Kari Harrell.
Clean-up hitter Gatling, one of two sophomores on the first team, hit over Warriors' No. 3 hitter, batted .433 with just three errors at the hot corner.
Harrell, best known as a scoring dynamo in field hockey, hit .436 and scored 24 runs, the same number as Gatling and one more than Behrends.
Nansemond River pitcher Chrissy Mims and outfielder LaToya Crocker made second-team all-district, along with Lakeland shortstop Dee Dee Belcher and outfielder Kristy Cornett. ILLUSTRATION: HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
