TOURNAMENTS

CHAMBER GOLF CLASSIC: The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Division will hold its Planters/Chamber Golf Classic on June 14 at the Suffolk Golf Course.

The Classic will use a Florida best-ball format with a shotgun start. Flights will be pre-determined by handicaps by club pro Mark Lambert.

Barton Ford Lincoln Mercury will give a new car for the first hole-in-one on the ninth hole. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded to the low three teams in each flight. A cookout dinner will be served after play.

The Classic is limited to 120 golfers. For more information, call the Chamber office at 539-2111.

PORTSMOUTH AMATEUR GOLF: The Portsmouth City Amateur golf tournament, which had been scheduled for May 13-14, is being rescheduled due to work at Sleepy Hole.

The tentative date is June 24-25.

The 36-hole event will be played at Sleepy Hole for the third straight year. J.P. Leigh, a Suffolk resident and a Portsmouth native, is the defending champion. Leigh won the 67th annual City Amateur with 151 last year. He edged Troy Ferris of Virginia Beach and Jeff Shield of the Eastern Shore by one shot.

ROUND ROBIN TENNIS: The Suffolk Tennis Association's annual Kat and Kitten round robin tournament will be held Saturday at Lake Meade Landing Tennis Complex.

Kat and Kitten teams consist of an adult and a 12s or 14s boy or girl. Some juniors play with their parents; most play with an adult interested in junior development, says director Howard Mast.

Play in the 12s division begins at 1:30, with 14s play kicking off at 3:30 p.m.

Volunteer adults are also being sought, and may be asked to play in both divisions. To enter or for more information, call 539-3723 or 934-7822 before noon Saturday.
