BRUINS, WILDCATS TAKE 8 OF 11 SPOTS FOUR PLAYERS ARE HONORED AS REPEAT PICKS WITH FIRST-TEAM DESIGNATION.

GIVEN THAT THE two teams thoroughly dominated play this season, it's no surprise that Western Branch and Great Bridge hold the majority of the positions on the annual All-Southeastern District girls softball team, taking eight of 11 slots.

They split their two games during the season, and Western Branch added a district tournament title to its regular season championship with a 4-3 win over the Wildcats in postseason play. Both teams were eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Region tournament.

All-District picks are based on regular-season performance.

Four players - Great Bridge seniors Marni Magyar and Emily Ouzts, and Western Branch's Calee Morris and Jaci Morris - return as first-team selections. Four players move up from the second team.

It is Magyar's third-straight appearance as the first-team catcher. She hit

Ouzts led Great Bridge in several offensive categories, including batting average (.508), RBIs (40), and slugging percentage (1.119).

``She's always had a super arm, but she's done a lot to improve her batting average,'' said Wildcats coach Noble Palmer of his centerfielder. ``Her technique has improved and she's hitting the long ball better than ever before.''

Calee Morris, a senior, hit .436 with 12 RBI and had a .979 fielding percentage at first base.

``She's so good, so solid, that sometimes you forget she's even over there,'' said Western Branch coach Chris Ake. ``She just does not make mistakes.''

Jaci Morris led the Bruins with 32 RBIs and five home runs, and hit .431 from the cleanup position. She had seven assists from centerfield.

``She's just a real strong kid, one of the top three athletes I've ever coached,'' Ake said.

Morris' teammate, junior Nicole Belote, earns selection at pitcher, moving up from the second team in 1994. She was named MVP on the All-Chesapeake team.

Belote went 15-3 with a 1.50 earned-run average in the regular season. She had 12 complete games and four shutouts. Belote also hit .467 for the Bruins.

``She works really hard, pitches all year round,'' said Ake. ``And she's a thinker - she makes sure she's mentally prepared.''

Churchland's Stacey Hundley, the only freshman on the two units in 1994, was selected as the MVP in Portsmouth and is the only sophomore on the first team. She was the Truckers' leadoff hitter and batted .415 with four home runs, 26 runs scored, and 16 stolen bases.

``Just a delight to coach her,'' said Churchland coach Bobbi Conrad. ``She never misses a practice and always is enthused. She really provides a lift for the team.''

Deep Creek senior Jaynene Allen was selected as the first-team utility player after being named the second-team catcher last season. Allen played mostly at catcher or shortstop for the Hornets, hitting .446 with 31 RBIs, six homers and six triples.

``I could put her anywhere, she's just one of those kinds of kids,'' said coach Barbara Stephenson.

Dana Crisostomo, a junior at Great Bridge, is the fourth player to be promoted to the first team. She hit .354 with 19 RBI and was second on the team with 28 runs scored.

``I've never had an outfielder that instinctively does the things she does. She gives and gives and never says a word,'' said Palmer.

Junior Starr Parker was the only player from Oscar Smith chosen to the first-team, earning the nod at shortstop with a .370 average with 16 RBI and 11 stolen bases. Parker also had a .940 fielding percentage.

``She's only a junior, but she really provided leadership for us,'' said Tigers coach Shane Smith, who earned District Coach of the Year in his inaugural season.

Great Bridge's Julie Collins (.306, 21 RBI) and Western Branch's Sarah Wolf (team-leading .483 average and 39 runs scored) round out the first team. ILLUSTRATION: ALL CHESAPEAKE SOFTBALL TEAM
