PAINTER WINS TOP PRIZE AT SEAWALL ART SHOW EIGHTY ARTISTS PARTICIPATED IN THE JURIED SHOW CHAIRED BY TERRI KARLSSEN.

Edgar Reims of Westover, Md., took top honors in the 25th annual Seawall Art Show last weekend, winning a prize of $1,500.

Reims' winning oil painting will become part of the the Portsmouth Museums' permanent civic collection.

``I'm pleased to have his work in our collection,'' said Betty Burnell, Portsmouth Museums director.

Burnell said the 25th edition of the waterfront art show was ``successful.''

``The quality of the art and the caliber of the artists spoke well for the show, a 25-year tradition in Portsmouth,'' Burnell said. A committee will begin work on the 1996 show this month.

A total of 80 artists participated in the juried show chaired by Terri Karlssen.

In addition to the top prize, 13 other awards were given out.

Other top awards went to Bill Reingold of Virginia Beach, second place and $1,000 for his acrylic paintings; F. Lennox Campello of Dumfries, third place and $750 for pencil, pen and ink drawings; Deborah Sorrentino of Norfolk, fourth place and $500 for sculpture.

Honorable mentions and $100 awards went to Christine Moscone of Virginia Beach, photography; Gordon Neal of Danville, pencil, pen and ink drawings; Alex and Gail Marksz of West Palm Beach, Fla., jewelry; David Gill of Richmond, watercolors; and Lillian Brooks of Hahira, Ga., watercolors.

Awards of merit and $50 checks went to Ruth Splichal of Portsmouth, mixed media; Helen Singleton of Norfolk, acrylic paintings; J. Howard Johnson of Portsmouth, pottery; Eric Coulson of Virginia Beach, wood sculpture; and Morris Johnson of St. Petersburg, Fla., mixed media.

Judges for the show were Richard Waller, director of the Marsh Art Gallery of the University of Richmond, and Steven S. High, director of Andeson Gallery of Virginia Commonwealth University.

A student art show was exhibited Saturday in conjunction with the Seawall Art Show and was judged by Ricardo Alma of Williamsburg, one of last year's winners in the show.

Students winners were Sarah Ashe of Churchland High, first place and $100; Hannibal Hasan of Woodrow Wilson High, second place and $75; Nicholas Harris of Churchland High, third place and $50; Cecilia Wilson of Woodrow Wilson High, fourth place and $25.

Honorable mention and $10 checks went to Brian Howell, Nicole Ditomasso, Josh Riley and Jason Markle, all of Churchland High, and Bobby Wahrenburg of Woodrow Wilson High. by CNB
