Councilman Alan P. Krasnoff has suggested that the city's auditor look into the school system's financial affairs to see if he can find ways to save money.
Why not?
Nearly half of Chesapeake's revenue goes into the public school system. It's the largest budget item by far. Anyone who's serious about efficiency will look there first for savings.
There is some concern over protocol, whether the City Council should be getting involved in School Board business when there is no reason to suspect wrong-doing.
But, protocol aside, City Council is responsible for the entire budget. If an audit can help manage the people's money better, who can object to that?
Auditor Jay Poole is good at what he does. Always before, when he's been asked to examine a department, he has found things that could stand improvement.
He should have a chance to do it again. by CNB
