NO WELFARE FOR THE ABLE-BODIED

``Ending Welfare'' (editorial, May 27) made the statement that Aid to Families with Dependent Children was born in the Great Depression to provide benefits to needy women and children without forcing mothers to work. This is a half-truth.

AFDC was founded to provide benefits to widows with children, not illegitimacy or thousands of deadbeat dads.

As long as we reward individuals for having children out of wedlock and not making the father and/or the grandparents of the children provide necessary benefits, we will never get the welfare mess under control.

If I sleep with the mother, then I should be responsible for the child.

I should not be forced to support someone else's child at the expense of my family.
