IF YOU'RE 16 or over, have $35 and some formal wear, are free on June 9 and are itchin' to go to a prom, I have your solution.
Calvary Revival Church is putting on the ritz this year with its prom alternative at the Omni Hotel in Newport News.
``Actually,'' said Calvary Revival's youth pastor Mark Lawrence, ``it's more than an alternative. It's a way to have good wholesome fun with some neat people.''
Allow me to map out the events.
First, you need to provide your own transportation to either the Omni Hotel in Newport News or to Calvary Revival in Norfolk, where you can get free rides to the Omni.
At the Omni, they will have a disc jockey as well as a nationally known rap group called D.O.C. The music will be playing from 7 p.m. to midnight.
I don't really like rap, but these guys are good, so you will probably dance your butt off all night.
The theme of the prom is ``Celebration, Feast & Fellowship,'' and as for the feasting, there is an all-you-can-eat buffet style banquet. A 3-by-5-inch photo is included in the ticket price.
As you can see, Calvary Revival has decided to make this evening as close to an actual prom as you can get.
By now I'm sure you're thinking, ``Is this a CHRISTIAN ONLY prom because it's put on by a church?'' The answer is no. Lawrence said that everyone is welcome so long as they play by the rules: no drinking, smoking, profanity, drugs or nasty dancing. They are trying to break down the barriers of religion and race by making this an open event with something for everyone.
To reserve a ticket or for more information, call Sirron Ware or Mark Lawrence at 587-7000.
In my column I try to provide something for everyone, so if you don't want to go to a big ol' prom, then go see a little show.
You see, I never, ever write about big shows by bands you already know are playing. I prefer to write about small bands who mean nothing to the corporate rock industry and who are actually talented. By doing this, I feel I am contributing to the cause of bands trying to make it in the musical mire that is Hampton Roads and helping you find decent bands to love and call your own.
My favorite band in the whole world is playing this weekend at the Fire Escape in Virginia Beach. It is Four Living Creatures, a punk-funky-goth band, and Saturday night the group is having an album release party. A DJ will be spinning the discs. Cain's Pain, a Pearl Jam-my alternative band, will also play. I am so happy that these guys got signed to a label.
I talked to Jairemi Rodgers, one-fifth of 4LC, and he had this objective comment about the album: ``People will be amazed at the quality of the disc, the production and the variety of music, considering that it's our first release and it's for an independent company. It's equal to or better than a major-label release.''
The album is titled ``Proletariat (oooo, an SAT word) Poetry,'' and it is truly groovin'. And by the way, ``proletariat'' means of the lowest class or working class - to save you the trouble of looking it up. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo
