In their last two games Southampton pitchers had tossed 14 scoreless innings.
Nansemond River ended that streak quickly, scoring four runs in the first three innings to beat the Raiders, 5-3, in the Region I baseball championship Thursday.
The Warriors (19-5) will host a Group AA State quarterfinal Tuesday at 4 p.m., while Southampton (18-6) will visit the Region II champion.
Donald Turner walked and scored on a passed ball in the first and Grayson Craun's sacrifice fly scored Mike Byrum in the second.
In the third, Turner walked and scored on a double steal and J.C. Caperton bunted for a hit and came in on Lee Park's groundout.
Jason Taylor (5-1) pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out three for the Warriors.
``I didn't think I was pitching that well until the fifth and sixth innings,'' Taylor said. ``I was lucky to have the team hitting behind me.''
With one on and two outs in the fifth, Nansemond River rightfielder John Drames robbed William Brown of an extra base hit when he snagged a line drive on the warning track. by CNB
