TBA AWARDS ITS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Six local high school graduates were each awarded a $6,400 scholarship by the Tidewater Builders Association. The students were honored at a meeting last month.

``They were all very, very deserving of scholarships,'' said Howard Weisberg, the selection committee chairman, referring to the 233 applicants. ``It makes me wish we had more than six scholarships to award.''

The six students are Matthew Berdy, Ocean Lakes High School, Virginia Beach; Richard Clutter, Green Run High, Virginia Beach; Dorothy Dickman, Churchland High, Portsmouth; Joseph DiMaria III, Indian River High, Chesapeake; Frank Thomson III, Wilson High, Portsmouth, and Cregan Montague, Maury High, Norfolk.

Jason Gibson of Indian River High won a $1,250 scholarship in the TBA's Young Designers' Competition. He also received a $500 savings bond from Virginia Beach Federal Savings Bank.

The runners-up, who each received a $750 scholarship, were Jim Davis of Kellam High School, Virginia Beach; Charles Smith, Western Branch High, Chesapeake, and Charles Coffelt and Jamie Joyner, both of Franklin High in Franklin.

In addition to the latest awards, the TBA will continue to provide scholarship funding during the upcoming academic year to 17 previous winners who have maintained at least a C average.

Rose & Krueth Realty Corp. won a first place award in the Relo advertising and promotional contest held recently in San Antonio, Texas. The local firm's business forms were judged ``exceptional.'' Rose & Krueth is one of nearly 800 members of the Relo network, specializing in employee relocation.

Mike Jones has joined Rose & Krueth as managing broker of the Kempsville office at 400 Oakmears Crescent, Virginia Beach. Jones is a member of both the Tidewater Association of Realtors Million Dollar Sales Club and the National Association of Home Builders Million Dollar Circle.

Jim Majka has joined Century 21 Man-Jac Realty in Newport News as managing broker. Prior to taking this position, Majka was managing broker and co-owner of Twiddy Realty. A former teacher, he has been in the real estate business 19 years.

Prudential Decker Realty has announced its top listing and sales associates for March and April.

In March, B.J. Basnight and Frank Trygar were top listing and sales agents respectively for the Lynnhaven office; Ann Davis and Mandy Yoder, top listing and sales agents respectively, Beach office; Randy Scott, top listing and sales agent, Great Neck office, and Patsy Wyllie and Valarie Hill, top listing and sales agents respectively, Chesapeake office.

In April, John Savino, top sales and listing agent, Lynnhaven office; Susan Pender and Ann Davis, top listing and sales agents respectively, Beach office; Ken Olive, top listing and sales agent, Great Neck office, and Bettie Wuthrich and Pat Core, top listing and sales agents respectively, Chesapeake office.

Sturgeon Bay, Wis., located on Lake Michigan, is the No. 1 vacation home market in the United States, according to a survey by Century 21 Real Estate Corp. The company looked at 172 vacation home markets and rated them as to lifestyle, accessibility, affordability and market conditions.

In the South, according to Century 21, South Hill, Va., which is close to Buggs Island Lake and Lake Gaston, was rated the top vacation home site, followed by Ocean City, Md.; Lake Marion, S.C.; Clayton, Ga., and Emerald Isle, N.C.

Buyers of the homes in Deer Crossing in Chesapeake are being offered a guaranteed low heating and cooling costs through the the Louisiana Pacific SnugHome cellulose insulation process. The bill will will never exceed $60 per month, according to Bert Reavis, president of Chesapeake Homes, the home builder.

In addition, the Deer Crossing dwellings are built to comply with the standards of Virginia Power's Energy Saver Home Program. As a bonus, buyers are eligible for a cheaper Energy Efficient Mortgage.

High-tech update: Electronic Realty Associates (ERA Real Estate) has introduced a new relocation computer program managed through Windows-based software called the Electronic Referral Network. It includes maps of 25 metro areas and cross sections of homes typical of the area. In addition, the ERN program features the Places Rated Almanac, which ranks and compares 340 metropolitan areas in the nation.

Local agencies offering ERN are ERA Steingold Realty, Norfolk; ERA Realty Inc., Hampton; ERA Ed Trotman Real Estate, Chesapeake, and ERA Sasser Realty Co., Portsmouth.

For renters contemplating buying a home, Stratosphere Publishing of Berkeley, Calif., is offering Homebuyer, a book and Windows disk combination that presents all the pros and cons. It's $27.95 and can be ordered by phoning 800-646-6456.
