Attendance at major-league baseball games is down by a fourth from last year, and TV viewership of the games is off even more.
Great! Keep it up, fans! Make major-league baseball suffer for the 232-day baseball strike it inflicted on us. They didn't care about us. Watch us not care about them. Hear us roar! Or rather, not roar. Feel the silence at the parks!
It's regrettable attendance is not off more. Still, the teams stand to lose at least $300 million from all those empty seats and relatively unwatched televised games.
We've talked with fans who have happened upon baseball games while channel surfing. The temptation has been strong to stop and watch just a few batters. But many are resisting. They continue surfing till they find a situation comedy to fall asleep to. We salute them.
Meanwhile, the Norfolk Tides are off to a terrific start. They have a shortstop worth the price of admission. Watch the Tides or play catch with children.
