BEAUTIFY THE CITIES WITH FLOWERS

Winston Gouldin's letter (May 30) is right on target. Norfolk Botanical Garden is a beautiful place with many different gardens within its borders.

The rose gardens (which are spectacular this time of year) and the herb garden (a subtle wonder) flourish in a most magnificent way. The formal gardens, statuary and wildflower acreage are lush and inviting, and it would do anybody a world of good to meander down the canals on the water tour.

Mr. Gouldin is also right in suggesting we need to find a way to share the beauties of the Garden with everyone in Hampton Roads. Every children's summer camp should take at least one trip to the gardens. Children and adults who may not have the joy of such surroundings in their everyday lives should have the opportunity to enjoy nature's simplest pleasure.

The garden acts as a spiritual restorative. One is able to relax, create, think and dream. It is time to re-create such gardens throughout the city of Norfolk.

Let the neighborhoods, rich and poor, become reflections of the jewel tucked away off Azalea Garden Road. In that way, the people of the city can enjoy the effects of living in and seeing the wonders of nature, and tourists would more than appreciate a city in which every nook and cranny is filled with a pleasant visual surprise.

There are civic leagues and neighborhood organizations in place and ready to begin to help beautify our city.

The Campostella Heights Civic League has begun a ``Most Beautiful Lawn and Garden Award'' for our neighborhood. Each month we award a $10 gift certificate for home improvement to our winner, and the competition is pretty stiff. We hope this will encourage everyone to get out, spruce up and beautify.
