A Hampton man who was involved in a car chase in March led police on another chase Saturday night. This one ended when he crashed his car into trees and was hospitalized, police spokesman Mike Simpkins said.
Joseph Savage, 34, was spotted Saturday about 10:34 p.m. on East Washington Street, by Officer D.M. Smith, who had arrested him in March. He signaled for Savage to stop, but Savage kept driving.
Savage's description and license plate were broadcast, and another officer spotted and attempted to stop him.
Police followed Savage for about five miles down Factory Street to Hosier Road until Savage's car went out of control and hit some trees, Simpkins said.
Savage was taken by Nightingale Air Ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was listed in stable condition Sunday afternoon.
His estimated speed when he crashed was 80 mph, Simpkins said. Police said alcohol was involved and a small amount of narcotics was found on Savage.
Savage, of the 1400 block of Oakcrest Drive, will be charged with attempting to evade police, reckless driving, driving after being judged a felonious habitual offender, possession of a controlled substance and failure to wear a seat belt, Simpkins said.
