MORE MONEY NO CURE FOR EDUCATION ILLS

I must disagree with you (``Allen shuns money,'' editorial, May 31) and concur with Governor Allen, concerning applying for funds under the Goals 2000. The standards that have come out of the Goals 2000 group are worse than pathetic, not accurately reflecting history or the strengths and values of this nation. The use of taxpayers' funds to this end should be the subject of criminal inquiries. The academic credentials of the perpetrators of this nonsense should be called into question.

It is also time to accept the fact that the problems in education are not cured by more money. The two worst school systems in the country, Washington, D.C., and New York City, spend the most per capita. Is this what we want to emulate?

Better management of the assets of the existing systems and streamlining the bureaucracy will do more for the schools than having a bunch of bureaucrats applying for another grant so they can do more paperwork to comply with the requirements of the grant.
