A U.S. aircraft carrier collided with a support ship in the Persian Gulf Monday, damaging the smaller ship and injuring a member of its crew.
Both ships were operating under their own power, but the support ship Sacramento was returning to port to evaluate the damage, said Cmdr. T. McCreary, a spokesman for U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, based in the Gulf.
A crew member aboard the Sacramento suffered slight injuries, McCreary said. He did not identify the crew member or provide other details.
The nuclear-powered carrier Abraham Lincoln entered the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. The collision occurred Monday while the two ships were transferring parts and fuel.
The Navy did not specify the exact locations of its vessels.
The Abraham Lincoln is based at Alameda, Calif. The Sacramento's home port is Bremerton, Wash. by CNB
