CONGRESSMAN TO BE MAIN COURSE AT BIRTHDAY ROAST

What can you do to honor your favorite congressman on his birthday?

Local Democrats decided an appropriate gesture would be to roast their U.S. representative, Norman Sisisky who's served them in Washington for 14 years.

Sisisky has done an outstanding job, said Raleigh Isaacs, publicity chairman for the event.

``He's done an awful lot for this area,'' Isaacs said, noting that the event is open to the public.

Sisisky is a well-respected congressman in all circles, Isaacs said.

``It doesn't matter whether you're a Democrat or a Republican,'' he said. ``It doesn't really make any difference with Norman Sisisky. He applies his knowledge and skills to helping everyone.''

Sisisky represents the Fourth Congressional District, which stretches from Petersburg south to Emporia and east to parts of Portsmouth and Chesapeake and most of Suffolk.

The festivities will be held Saturday, the day after Sisisky turns 68.

A social hour will kick off the fun at 6 p.m. at the National Guard Armory on Godwin Boulevard. The program will begin at 7 p.m. with a seated dinner, the roast and an opportunity for Sisisky to respond to his roasters.

Roasters will include state senators Richard J. Holland and L. Louise Lucas, U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott and former Suffolk Democratic Committee chairman Bobby Harrell.

Tickets at $25 each are available from Democratic Committee members. For information, call Benford Hunter, 539-9400; Ron Sobel, 539-6234, or Isaacs, 539-5119. ILLUSTRATION: Norman Sisisky
