THOMAS J. COPELAND

Thomas Jefferson Copeland, 81, died Tuesday, June 6, 1995, in Portsmouth.

Mr. Copeland, a native of Chuckatuck, was a long-term resident of Nansemond County and son of the late John Samuel Copeland and Sarah Eudora Smith Copeland. He was retired as a farmer and dairyman after 50 years. He was a member, trustee and Deacon Emeritus of Berea Christian Church; member of Nansemond Masonic Lodge (NU)77; charter member of Bennetts Creek Ruritan Club; charter member of Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies; and member of Khedive Temple.

He was the beloved husband of Lucille Spruill Copeland; beloved father of Sarah C. Bennett of Suffolk, Frances C. Johnson of Portsmouth, Phyllis C. Creamer and Barbara C. Hodges of Chesapeake, and Daphne Thomas Copeland of Raleigh, N.C. He is also survived by a sister, Emma C. Darden of Portsmouth; two brothers, John S. Copeland of Norfolk and Elmer E. Copeland of Hampton; seven much adored grandchildren, Thomas E. Bennett, Elizabeth B. Lloyd, Karen J. Warren, Susan J. Easter, Jennifer L. Creamer, Christy L. Creamer and Andrew Thomas Copeland; three much adored great-grandchildren, Christopher Warren, Chandler Easter and Rebecca Ann Bennett.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Oakland Christian Church by the Rev. James Cress, the Rev. William A. Grissom and the Rev. Richard Browder. Burial will be in Oakland Christian Church Cemetery. The family will be at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at 2829 Meadowview Road, Chesapeake.
